Jong Spirit regrets that the Belgian federal government government has decided to call for elections in June, during the exam period for students. As young left-liberals, Jong Spirit wants to propose long-term solutions to guarantee that everyone can participate fully in the democratic process. E-voting offers a possible solution.
The elections on the 10th June will not be the last time that elections are held during the exams. Since voting in one's home town is mandatory in Belgium, this will continue to pose problems for thousands of students. In 2009, the regional and European elections will take place on 14th June. It is therefore imperative that students can exercise their rights in a more practical manner.
Jong Spirit notes that by 2009, every Belgian citizen will have an electronic identity card. It is one of the most advanced and most secure identification systems in the world. For Jong Spirit, this card should not only be used to create a comprehensive e-government, but also for e-democracy. E-voting, while guaranteeing confidentiality, has become a realistic option.
In 2007, Jong Spirit proposes to make e-voting possible for all voters that have a legitimate cause to vote by proxy (e.g. students, people who travel abroad,...). These experiences can help to roll-out the system of e-voting for all citizens in the elections of 2009. In addition, Jong Spirit wants to promote other means of making voting more easy, e.g. voting my mail.

On December 3rd, hundreds of energized and enthusiastic young liberals departed Montreal for their home ridings ready to spread the Liberal message, united behind the new Leader, Stéphane Dion.
During the convention, the Young Liberals of Canada hosted a successful biennial meeting where over 600 young liberals came together to discuss YLC business and hear from some great speakers. The Rt. Hon. Paul Martin gave welcoming remarks in front of a packed house, followed by speeches from all of the leadership candidates. The new Premier of New Brunswick, Shawn Graham, delivered the keynote address and gave insight into the importance of youth participation within the Liberal Party. It is always inspirational to young liberals to hear from successful young politicians like Mr. Graham.
The YLC caucus liaison, Dr. Keith Martin, and senate liaison, Senator Rod Zimmer, were both on hand to present the awards for ‘Young Liberal of the Year’ and ‘YLC Campus Club of the Year.’ This year the Young Liberal of the Year Award went to Braeden Caley, a native of British Columbia, and Campus Club of the Year was awarded to the St. Thomas University Young Liberals. Congratulations!
The Young Liberals were also successful in passing two policies on the plenary floor; small arms and light weapons proliferation, and training in a second official language.
The convention also marked the end of a term for the outgoing YLC table officers and representatives. I’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thanks to the outgoing members, and to wish you all the best in the future! Although this is the end of a term for one group of executives, this also marks the beginning of a new group of table officers and representatives. I’d like to congratulate and welcome the following people to their new roles within the YLC team:
Table Officers: Cory Pike – President Brian Clow – VP Finance Samuel Lavoie – VP Policy Marc Gendron – VP Communications Denise Brunsdon – VP Organization Jessie Chahal – VP External
Representatives : Melissa Cotton – Rep. to the Standing Committee on Policy Development Marek Krasula – Rep. to the Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal affairs Jenna McGrath – Rep. to the National Women’s Liberal Commission Darcy Diachinsky – Rep. to the Aboriginal Peoples Commission
The YLC table officers have already hit the ground running on fundraising, recruitment, and election readiness. This is a very exciting time for our organization, and we are well positioned to prepare for the next election.
Are you interested in working with the YLC prior to and during the next election? We are currently looking for volunteers to sit on a number of our election committees. There are positions available on the following committees: opposition watch, communications, media and promotion, and tour organization. If interested, please send the following information to spickup@liberal.ca: your name, phone number, email address, and riding location (both during the semester, and the summer).
