The Youth Department has been proposing the idea of a Taiwanese Youth Day since March 16th, and the vote has attracted the recognition and participation of many young people. The Department has collected, via the internet, the following suggestions for dates:

Ultra-endurance marathon runner, Kevin Lin (???), has an international reputation for completing established desert ultra-marathons, including crossings of the Gobi. On Feb. 20th he ran across the Sahara desert in a world record-breaking 111 days, to raise global awareness on water shortage in Africa. |

Young elite of Taiwan prosecuted
On this date, many aspiring young people were slaughtered by KMT troops when they tried to organize peace-keeping teams during the 228 Massacre. Many students were executed in groups. |

After the outbreak of the 228 Massacre, the county magistrate of Mount A-li, Kao Yi-sheng, led the Tsou youths (??) in retaliation against the KMT military. |

Birthday of Taiwan’s top female athlete
Popular in the U.S., Chi Cheng was famous for her track and field sprinting, women’s hurdles and pentathlon. Between 1969 and 1970, she dominated the sporting world, breaking six world records in track and field in 1970. In total, she broke nine world records, equalized four world records and re-broke many Asian, U.S., national and personal records in the two years. An all-rounder, she has won competitions in high jump, sprint, hurdle, long jump and pentathlon. |

March Student Movement
The number of students from all over Taiwan participating in this movement reached 6000. They gathered at the CKS memorial square for a sit-in protest, demanding: 1. Dissolution of the National Assembly. 2. Abolition of temporary provisions 3. A new forum on national issues. 4. A timetable for political and economic reform.
This was not only the first large-scale student protest since the nationalist government moved to Taiwan, but also an influential event in the democratic politics of Taiwan.

Chou Chun-hsun represented Taiwan and became the World Chess Champion
The 27-year-old, Chou Chun-hsun, won the 11th World Chess Championship. He was the first Taiwanese to win the contest.

Yang Chuan-kwang represented Taiwan and won the first gold medal in the Asian Olympic Games
Yang Chuan-kwang, from the Malan Amis tribe in Taitung City, Taitung County, represented the Republic of China in the Decathlon, and is the record holder of over 9000 points in the discipline. He has thus won himself the nickname of “Asia’s Iron Man.”

Wang Chien-Ming, a Taiwanese baseball star in the U.S., has performed exceedingly well in Major League Baseball. He was the first Taiwanese to enter the Yankee stadium in New York.

Mr. Zhu MuYan and Miss Chen ShihHsin both won Olympic gold medals
Taiwanese taekwondo contestants, Mr. Zhu MuYan and Miss Chen ShihHsin, both won the Olympic gold medal in their discipline, making them the first gold medal winners in the history of Taiwan’s participation in the Olympic games.

Yi-Wei Battle, the last armed resistance against Japanese aggression
The Yi-Wei Battle was recognized as the last armed resistance against Japanese aggression in 1895, and refers to the Year of Yi-Wei in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Two young Hakka men, Mr. Wu TangXiang and Jiang ShaoZu, led Taiwanese people in a bitter fight against the Japanese aggression, and died. This was also the largest battle in the history of Taiwan. |

The establishment of the Taiwan Cultural Association
The Taiwan Cultural Association emerged through the work of a group of students led by Mr. Jiang WeiShui in the Japanese colonial period, and gained a high level of student membership. The cultural forums, movies and plays organized by the association were strongly supported and well-attended, having an important influence on the lives of numerous students.
The Taiwan Cultural Association was considered the cradle and formative impulse of many national and social movements. The association not only enlightened young students and their movements, but also ushered in an era of peasant and labor movements, as it had a policy of supporting rural communities and grassroots initiatives. |
