IFLRY Statement
On an immediate end to settlement activity in the Palestinian Territories
Tuesday, July 28, London
(UK) - Today, the US envoy to the Middle East,
George Mitchell, met with the Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu about
reviving the regional peace process. The issue of Israeli settlements in the
occupied Palestinian territories was expected to be one of the focal points of
the meeting, but no results have been announced as of yet. The International
Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY), the worldwide umbrella of liberal youth
organizations, calls for an immediate end to settlement activity in the Palestinian Territories and expects US government
representatives to firmly stick to this position in their dealings with their
Israeli counterparts.
IFLRY asks Israel to stop its settlement policy in the
occupied territories, including East Jerusalem,
and to immediately stop the expansion of existing settlements, including
“natural growth” and related activities. It should also seriously commit itself
to negotiations leading to an agreement of borders and territories that will
ultimately have to lead to the widely favored two-state solution.
At its recent Executive
Committee (July 16-18, Beirut - Lebanon), IFLRY adopted a resolution to this
end, after having considered among others the various United Nations Security
Council and International Court of Justice statements and documents on this
issue.
