    World Conference on Racism

(@ RACISM-LEON PRETORIA 13 February 2008 Sapa) LEON WARNS ABOUT CONFERENCE "HATE FEST" Democratic Alliance MP Tony Leon on Wednesday questioned how South Africa hoped to steer next year's Review Conference against Racism from being a "hate fest". Speaking at the Women's International Zionist Organisation (WISO) meeting in Cape Town, Leon said next year's conference could determine the path South Africa sets for itself in the world in the decades. "This is a crucial moment, I believe, for South Africa' s non-governmental organisations, steeped themselves in a tradition of rights' activism and a championing of international standards of democracy, to step up to the plate," he said. Leon said the previous World Conference against Racism, which was held in Durban in 2001, was "dismal" in advancing the fight against racism. The results of it were almost "nonexistent" and it was a slanted, sectional and sectarian conference, he said. "The question then arises how South Africa hopes to steer the conference in a direction of balance and probity, rather than leading it to degenerate again into a 'hate fest' of intolerance and imprudence," Leon said. President Thabo Mbeki announced in his State of the Nation speech that South Africa would host the review conference in Durban in 2009. "We are confident that, informed by their abhorrence of the scourge of racism and the devastating consequences it continues to exact on humanity, the governments and peoples of the world will work together with us to see that the Review Conference achieves its objectives." Many Western governments have already expressed unease about the conference and Canada has said outright that it would not attend. The United Nations preparatory committee for the conference is chaired by Libya and includes Cuba, Iran and Pakistan among its members.

    Re: World Conference on Racism

The 2001 meeting was marked by clashes over the Middle East and the legacy of slavery, and coincided with attacks oracle 1z0-047 dumps on Israel and anti-Israel demonstrations at a parallel conference of non-governmental organizations. The U.S. and Israel walked out midway through the 2001 conference over a draft resolution that, in their opinion, singled out Israel for criticism 1z0-048 dumps and likened Zionism to racism. The European Union also refused to accept demands by Arab states to criticize Israel for "racist practices." Also in the conference, African countries - led by Nigeria and Zimbabwe 640-721 - and African-American NGO's wanted individual apologies from each of the countries responsible for slavery, recognition of it as a crime against humanity and reparations called as such. The Europeans pulled together behind the UK and the best the Africans could get was a call for support for the New African 640-802 dumps Initiative, debt relief, funds to combat AIDS, the recovery of stolen government funds transferred to the West by former dictators and their cohorts, and an end to the trafficking in people. But the word 'reparations' did not survive.

President Ahmadinejad, the only major leader to attend the conference, said Jewish comptia a+ certification migrants from Europe and the United States had been sent to the Middle East after World War II "in order to establish a racist government in the occupied Palestine". He continued, through an interpreter: "And in fact, in exam 70-536 compensation for the dire consequences of racism in Europe, they helped bring to power the most cruel and repressive racist regime in Palestine." French Ambassador Jean-Baptiste Mattei said: "As soon as he started to braindump 70-646 address the question of the Jewish people and Israel, we had no reason to stay in the room," Associated Press reported. The walkout was a public relations disaster for the United Nations, which had hoped the conference would be a shining braindump 70-642 example of what the UN is supposed to do best – uniting to combat injustice in the world, said the BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva. Her colleague  described the walkout as a "stunt", arguing that people should have the right to criticise .

choosing sales tax alone and removing income tax would place an undue and unfair burden on the lowest wage earners and make economic survival impossible for unemployed people.
