As you may know, current social security and welfare systems cannot be funded eternally, particularly in Western European states. In some countries, left-wing forces still try to enhance the benefits, thus willing to even spend more - unsustainably - and hence threatening to burden more and more debts unto us, the young generation, who has to cover the expenses and debts in the future.
The jfs (jungfreisinnige schweiz, young liberals of Switzerland, jeunes radicaux suisses, giovani liberali radicali svizerri, giovens liberals radicals svizzers) search for instruments to induce politicians to think more about sustainable and intergenerational fair policies and act more responsively, particularly in the sector of social welfare.
To be precise, we recently just introduced a bill into our federal parliament, which would - if enacted - automatically launch an examination of newly enacted bills and their intergenerational impact (e.g. if social benefits of the pension system will be increased, this could destabilize the system and cause more debts, burdened unto the younger, future generations; in such a case, the examination would signal the problems and intergenerational effect).
Admittedly, such a parliamentary examination scheme on "intergenerational justice" (let's dub it PES) could lead to more bureaucracy (e.g. due to writing reports etc.), however, many countries already have environmental examination schemes, which are applied, before measure are taken.
We imagine, that the examination system could be pretty helpful in preventing politician to act only short-sighted. As a young party, it's our unique interest to protect our long-term well-being and the interests of the youth.
--> Now I am very interested how things are in your country:
Have you got already such an parliamentary examination? If so, how does it work? If not, do you have other measures in politics, that try to balance the intergenerational justice? How does your political system make sure that social welfare system is going to be sustainable?
