South Africa, that little safehaven at the foot of Africa, has recently enacted legislation to enable civil unions (ie. marriages) between people of the same sex, bcos even tho our constitution allows for it - the previous marriages act was written during apartheid, so a marriage was only legal if it was between a man and a woman (and in some cases between a man and woman who may have been his cousin, bcos thats how small our farming communities are)
i had wondered whether we had forced a 3-line whip and made it difficult for the traditional leaders to abstain from the vote, for the sole purpose of encouraging tourism from people who intended to get married in SA, but so far tho theres been no celebrity marriages under the new dispensation... we should get Ellen Degeneres to get married in South Africa... that will get things going...
