IFLRY Statement on Earth Day 2009

As the world celebrates the Earth Day this April, the International Federation of Liberal Youth commits to reach the gap between the attainment of multilateral-free-trade-driven-sustainable-economic-growth and healthy and balance environment in the entire planet.

The young liberals of the world affirm that environmental protection and promotion of liberal policies on trade, market and economic development exist in mutual thrust and gain with each other; they are complimentary goals, in tandem without conflict.

We believe that sustainable development and environmental protection are fundamental ends of every liberal democratic government. Thus, we affirm the World Trade Organization’s goal to allow the optimal use of world’s resources in accordance with the objective of sustainable development, and to seek to protect and preserve the environment.

We give our full support to the notion that trade liberalization and stable and predictable trade conditions are conducive and complimentary to environmental protection and preservation initiatives. And that free market and technological advances are the best tools to solve environmental problems and lift people out of poverty, rather than greater government, market and trade regulation.

The International Federation of Liberal Youth seeks a world with abundant clean air to breath, clean water to drink and vibrant nature and healthier communities to live. Thus, we express our great concern to the current status of Earth’s environment that continuously suffers from loss of wildlife and biodiversity, ecosystem degradation, global warming resulting to extreme whether conditions, ozone depletion and all kinds of pollution. These problems have put a great risk to humanity’s survival and further development. No other time in human history that urgently compels everyone, but now, to act in solving the plight of our environment.

Therefore, based on the aforesaid principles, the International Federation of Liberal Youth urges all nations to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide domestic legislations for such. We also call for strict adherence and re-engagement to the commitments avowed in the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), to the Kyoto Protocols and other post-Kyoto frameworks regarding climate change and global warming.

We promote the use of green technologies, investment in clean energy, and the free trade of affordable environmental protection tools coming from developed channeled to developing nations.

We strongly support the creation of New Forum of Largest Greenhouse Gas Emitters as advocated by US President Barack Obama during his campaign. And we will be watchful to the commitment made by the United States of America in leading the fight for environmental protection under the new government.

Finally, we call for a strong and coherent international effort to address the looming problem of Earth’s environment, and to consolidate different multilateral environmental agreements from different international institutions in the ambit of liberal democratic principles of sound environmental protection and sustainable economic development.
